Character history:
Schwann Oltorain was born to a 16 year old scullery maid and fathered by the nobleman she served. His father cast his mother out of his household and she returned to the Lower Quarter, the slummiest, most crime ridden area of the Imperial Capital, Zaphias. The knights and the rest of the Empire often ignored the residents and their needs there; many die of easily curable diseases and hunger.
When he was 13, his mother died of illness and he was left to fend for himself. Seeing no other alternative, he enlisted in the knights, hoping to bring equality and help for those in the Lower Quarter. Though only a commoner, his talents with combat, leadership and strategy caught the eye of the ranking officers and he was placed in officer training.
Many of the other cadets treated him badly since officer training was often reserved for only the most well-connected families in the nobility. One of the officer cadets became his friend and eventually his lover. Though she called herself Casey Dalvist, he found out that she was actually Casey Whitehorse, daughter of the Guild Union Boss, a sworn enemy of the empire. Upon learning this, he initially thought she was a spy, but she explained she was only following the tenets of her father’s guild—to do what one believes is right, and she wanted to be a knight.
Their romance survived three years in training and a year apart while sent to different areas of the world. When he was nearly twenty, he proposed marriage to her but she refused, telling him that the guilds did not believe in marriage as the Empire dictated it. Instead, they wed themselves using her traditions by cutting an “x” into their upper arms, exchanging words of devotion and the knives used in the ritual.
About eighteen-months later, Casey’s brigade was ambushed and she was assumed to have been killed in the battle, though her body was never found. Upon learning this, Schwann took it upon himself to venture to Dahngrest, the guild city, to find her father and tell him of her fate.
Upon arriving in Dahngrest he was arrested and put in prison. Eventually Don Whitehorse came to see him and to Schwann’s surprise he learned that Casey wasn’t dead. She had asked her father to get her out of the knights for reasons the Don didn’t, or wouldn’t, tell him. Just before dawn, Casey visited him in the cell but refused to allow him to see her face. Keeping him pinned to the wall, she told him it was over, to forget about her and to go live his life. Then she gave him his knife back and took hers back from him.
Heartbroken and full of questions, Schwann threw himself into his work and became the youngest man ever to make Captain. When he was 25, the Great War broke out and his brigade was stationed on Mount Temza, one of the largest battlegrounds in the conflict. It was just as he expected war to be—bloody, horrible, soul-consuming--until Casey walked back into his life.
Now guild-married to an arms dealer named Yeager, she decided to return to the knights to assist in the war to protect those she loved and to be near her husband. In the weeks that followed, Schwann learned she left the knights because she had a child by another man; not him nor Yeager. [In reality, the boy is Schwann’s and she didn’t want him to give up his self-appointed mission to fix the corruption of the empire from within. Schwann never learns this, though]
Knowing their history and hoping to kindle favor with Don Whitehorse, Commandant Alexei sends the two of them to Dahngrest to request aid from the guilds. During the journey, they begin an affair that they carry on behind Yeager’s back. It is on this voyage that he gains his guild-persona; she teaches him how to dress and how to speak. Casey also insists he tie his hair up because, “No self-respecting guildsman asks the Don for a favor with his hair in his face.” In order to complete the disguise, she puts her knife back on his belt and gives him a name to use while in Dahngrest—Raven.
After enlisting the aid of the guilds, they return to Mt. Temza to learn that Yeager has died in a recent battle. Faced with the reality that she may not survive this war and still wanting to fight, she had Schwann promise her that if she perished, he would go to Dahngrest and care for her son. He readily swore this to her with the words, “As long as I live no harm will come to your child.”
Unfortunately, Schwann was made to pay up on that promise. Casey died, falling into a pit of fire on the battleground. He had held her hand, desperately trying to pull her up, but he was stabbed in the back, directly to the heart, and let her go. In that moment he died, but his life was not over.
Alexei, wanting nothing more that an army of incredibly powerful and loyal soldiers, brought his First Captain back to life by implanting a Hermes Blastia in the space where his heart had been. Upon waking from death, Schwann convinced Alexei to let him spy on the guilds and left immediately for Dahngrest.
In the ten years that followed, Raven kept his promise and cared for Casey’s son, Harry. He also became Don Whitehorse’s right hand man and closest confidant. Though the Don was aware of his life as Schwann, he never once questioned Raven’s loyality. At times Raven would disappear and turn himself back into Schwann to take care of business within the Empire, but he never revealed any guild secrets, no matter how much Alexei pushed him for information.
Raven’s first encounter with Yuri Lowell (protaganist of Vesperia) is in the Zaphias jail. He goes there to sleep because “it’s quiet.” He helps Yuri escape only to cause trouble for him in later towns by using him as a distraction. Eventually, he forces himself into the party and is completely distrusted. Later, they learn is a member of Altosk (Don Whitehorse’s guild) and a close, personal friend of the Don himself.
When Harry (the Don’s grandson, Casey’s son and chosen successor) inadvertently causes a guild war between the Union and Pallestralle (a non-union, but very powerful guild), Raven gets him out of a tight spot. Upon learning of the problem, the Don goes to confront Yeager (who was also brought back by Alexei) for feeding Harry deliberately bad information to start the conflict. Knowing this is against Union law, Raven convinces the party to follow the Don and buys the old man some time so he can pursue Yeager. Unfortunately, Yeager gets away.
Having no other recourse to keep a guild war from breaking out, the Don decides to commit suicide to even the score with the other guild. Harry tries to go with him but Raven punches him out—cold. The Don’s last request to Raven is: “Nail Yeager. You’re the only one I can ask.” [Since the dispute between Schwann/Raven and Yeager is a personal quarrel over a woman, it is not forbidden in guild law and they can engage each other]
Shortly thereafter, Raven betrays the party and kidnaps the resident white mage, Princess Estelle. When the party finally finds Alexei abusing Estelle’s power in a forgotten shrine, Captain Schwann appears to fight the group. Realizing it’s Raven, they attempt to talk to him, but he wants none of it and battles them as if he wants them to kill him.
After the battle, he tells the others about the Great War and his heart blastia. He also reveals that Alexei planned to kill all of them—himself included—by collapsing the shrine. It was a suicide mission and one he welcomed because he was tired of being miserable. Yuri convinces him that he has no right to lay down and die. With that, he uses one of his exploding arrows and makes a path for the party to escape. Just as they are about to run, a ceiling beam falls. Using his heart blastia, Schwann holds the beam up and yells at them to go and not look back.
The Shrine collapses on top of Schwann and the party heads to Alexei’s mobile fortress to confront him. Once there, they find Raven and his most loyal brigade members. Raven tosses his knife to Yuri and says to kill him if he wants to for his betrayal. Instead, Yuri punches him in the head and tells him that he owes his life to Vesperia (Yuri’s guild).
Raven assists the party throughout the rest of their adventure and the world-changing conflict, often denying that he is Schwann. He tells quite a few people, “That poor schmuck died at that Shrine,” though the party does convince to embrace both sides of his life.
After the world is at peace, he returns to Dahngrest to assist Harry in rebuilding the Union and to keep an eye on the boy. He also has been seen in Zaphias, working as Captain Schwann to arrest corrupt officials in the empire and help the new Commandant keep the peace.
[He will be pulled from this point...post game]
Character personality:
Both of his sides have some common traits. He’s calculating, intuitive and intelligent. Those that are his friends will have his loyalty for life, provided they can tolerate whichever persona he chooses to show them. At this stage of his life he is more comfortable with Raven.
As Raven, he is an easy-going, nonchalant jackass that seems to care nothing for himself or others. He drinks heavily, carouses, makes quite a few off-color comments and often alienates the few who do care about him. It’s easier that way, he believes; less people to care for, less problems to deal with and less chances to suffer betrayal and loss. However, those few that are able to get close to him will be defended to the death. But, first they must put up with him long enough to realize that he’s not the jerk he often pretends to be and behind this mask lies a genuinely decent person.
When he plays the knight captain Schwann, he is serious, levelheaded and often morose. There are many bad memories tied to Schwann and sins that he believes would not be easily forgiven—even by his closest friends. It has been years since he was comfortable in this role, but he has learned to accept he must serve in it to keep his life, and thus the promise he made ten years ago.
Physical description:
A few things remain constant about Raven, even when he chooses to embrace his Schwann personality. He is thirty-five, a hair under six feet, tall and slender. His hair is light brown and his eyes are a bright, piercing green. Also, in the space where his heart used to be is a red blastia. He is quite self-conscious of this and will often insist on keeping his shirt on even when it is probably inappropriate to do so—as all of his one-night stands have learned.
One thing he always carries, whether acting as the guildsman or the knight, is a knife that he wears on his belt. About twelve inches long, it has an ornate hilt decorated with brown and red markings as well as two golden tassels. Though it serves him as a secondary weapon, its significance is more profound since Casey gave it to him during the guild-ritual that is the equivalent of marriage. This was taken from him upon his arrival at Glaxcin.
When dressed as Raven, he wears a long, purple coat with a black lapel that is a few sizes too large over a pink shirt. His pants are baggy, brown and he tucks the cuffs into his shoes. He pulls his hair into a sloppy, impossibly spiky ponytail and doesn’t bother to shave the stubble off his chin.
As Schwann, he wears the colors of his brigade—orange and red. The uniform consists of a black shirt, a tunic, a jacket, steel greaves, gloves and his captain’s cape. While some prefer long, flowing ones, his is cut short to aid in faster movement. He also pulls his hair down, his long bangs covering his left eye and like any good member of the military he is clean-shaven.
Magical powers or special skills:
As Raven, he fights with a guild-bow in one hand and his knife in the other. He is capable with distance and when he gets close to an enemy, he collapses his bow into a sword.
Schwann uses a knight’s sword, colored red to match his uniform. He also uses his knife for close combat.
Both personas are particularly gifted with Wind Magic and he can use his false heart blastia as weapon, hitting all within range with damaging magic. This causes him to lose a bit of his life each time, though.
He’s also decent cook, can sketch rather well (probably wouldn’t show anyone though) and is trained in field medicine.
Any crimes committed in canon:
Treason/betrayal, theft, harassing women and has killed enemies in combat.
Crime incarcerated into Glaxcin for:
Wrongfully accused of murder.
